The Sister School Project: Members

Joe Szwaja

Joe is the adult facilitator of the Sister School Project, and a teacher at Nova. He has been involved with humanitarian groups and activists for over 30 years, and has a great deal of experience in the fields of history and politics. In 2005, Joe traveled to East Timor with ten of his students to our sister school in Manatuto.

Daniel Monahan

Daniel is a Junior who has done a lot for East Timor. He Joined the East Timor class 2nd semester of the 2005-2006 school year. He learned East Timor’s history very quickly. He organized a house party fundraising event, without much teacher assistance. Very few people at Daniels age have the skills to do that. Hardly any Nova students have organized a house party. Daniel has set a new record, because no one in this project has organized a fundraising event after being in the East Timor class for so little time. Daniel is a natural at inviting people to events on the phone. Daniel often stays after class without being asked to do so, because of his integrity to help the people of East Timor. Daniel is very motivated and focused.

Debra Morison

Debra has been involved in assisting East Timor since the late 1990s. She serves as clinic manager at the Pike Market Medical Clinic in downtown Seattle. Debra accompanied her husband Joe Szwaja and the 10 Nova students on the April 20005 sister school trip to East Timor. She has done a tremendous amount of work keeping track of donations and all financial transactions related to the project. In addition she has taken the lead in editing our project’s newsletter and maintaining regular correspondence with our sister school friends in East Timor
